Making Money Through Migration
Study the life of the Dane Albert Ballin , born on 15th of August 1857! His father was a tiny impoverished emigration agent. Hard work made Albert general manager of HAPAG, the „Hamburg-American Packetfahrt Aktiengesellschaft“. The German Kaiser became his friend. „My territory is the world“ was his saying. He won the competitive advantage against the Brittish, by providing excellency and quality. For overcoming seasonal downturns he invented the „pleasure crusades“.
For the first time in history „third class“ passengers were allowed on deck. The Hamburg cholera of 1892 caused a downswing of the emigration business. The foundation of the „Ballin Stadt“ Hamburg gave his company a renewed business growth. Ballin’s diplomatic character earned the respect of his English competitors. World War I , however, ruined his company and Albert’s spirit. He committed suicide on November 9th, 1918.
